As a doctor trained in craniofacial development, I am correlating the detrimental environmental effects that impact the growth of the craniofacial-respiratory complex.

I grew up in Mexico City, with 20 years living in the beautiful state of Virginia.
We serve patients from around the nation and overseas. Our international background and training allows us to implement techniques used around the world in the management of orthopedics, Myofunctional therapy and orthodontics. I have been trained by the best minds of our profession and care systems. Usually, acquiring knowledge from the doctors who invented a technique, diagnosis or treatment modalities directly. I belong to the most prestigious Study Clubs for the nation and overseas.

At Sunrise Orthodontics, our patients are evaluated to discern the underlying causes of their malocclusion. Dr. Calkins has witnessed the dramatic and progressive changes of the masticatory system; when facial muscles are weak, anatomical structures poorly developed along with a compromised airway.
Our philosophy of treatment is an integral health approach, to educate our patients about the intricacies of a manifested malocclusion. Our beginning point is the understanding of the overall health of our patients, once that is achieved, the creation of beautiful natural, healthy faces will be the frame of a functional occlusion and viable airway.

Our comprehensive approach allows us to search for the etiology behind the malocclusion that could potentially be a manifestation of sleep disordered breathing, craniofacial dystrophy or alterations of the environment that will have a negative impact on the growth and development of the craniofacial-respiratory complex.

Through the improvement of oral functions, breathing patency and correct body posture; the craniofacial-respiratory complex develops attaining overall health for our patients. With focus on etiological factors that might have a detrimental effect on masticatory effort, body posture, swallowing patterns, breathing, and temporomandibular joint disorders; as part of the understanding of the malocclusion presented by our patients.
